"Pappa" Ibrahim Kandji

Ibrahim Kandji (b. Senegal) is inspired by the intersections of city and street, combining

mixed media abstraction with found objects and traditional techniques from his homeland of

Senegal. From Dakar to Paris to LA, Kandji is now based in New York City where he brings a “uneek” perspective to his artwork. The layered figuration at the core of the canvas is about sharing icons as a testimony to a passing moment, conveying the relationships between past present and future.

"I find life to be a very nice canvas"

- Ibrahim Kandji

" Sometimes it’s like, What? Where am I going? I don't know, and that's hard to accept. Still, this is beautiful. You see, like a monarch butterfly getting out of the cocoon. Sometimes people never talk about being happy, saying always that life sucks, that all we have to do is pass through it. But then in this way, in this art, I'm talking about living as my art. This is living art, sharing myself. "

"I love going to classes. I used to go to philosophy classes. I mean, you know, international studies and languages, geography and all that. My favorite thing to do was just to listen. My classes were great, but I would draw. So probably I had something in me that was about discovering art. I should have studied it some time ago, but we are catching up."
